Four things a fund record needs each quarter, each of them held by someone outside the fund: the portfolio company's marks, the closing set from counsel, an underlying fund's capital account statement and an investor's W-9. Each is fetched and seated in the record, one of them only after a second request. The tax pack goes the other way, out to the client's own preparer.
